Abstract

Abstract: Autobiography, a genre which was excluded from the treaties of classical rhetoric, and whose name is recent, acquires visibility in the 19th Century thanks to Chateaubriand, Stendhal and George Sand. And at that moment, if not some given “norms”, at least some standard features appear, which will be analysed in this text, after a review of the different «heritages», Retz, Saint-Simon, De Brosses, St. Augustine, Rousseau above all. As for George Sand, the ethical questions, concerning the factual truth and the involvement of others, are taken into consideration, as well as aesthetic instances, like readability, the involvement of the reader, the status of the “I” in the text, the freedom of writing, the use of documents and the inscription of the historical context facing the personal history.
