Abstract

Abstract: The history of French Romanticism has often been presented as that of a violent break with the past, conducted in the name of the artistic freedom and foreign models, in particular English and German ones, of which the so-called «bataille d’Hernani» would constitute the final act. The press of the years that immediately preceded the first performance of Hernani shows, on the contrary, that the most attentive minds of the period were in favour of a strong renewal of the theatre, which they hoped, but they were far from wishing a radical break with the tradition advocated by Hugo, and they rather identified themselves with the moderate reform proposed by Casimir Delavigne, who carried it out on May 30th 1829 with Marino Faliero, welcomed with great enthusiasm by both the public and the critics.
